Oak Woodland Management
We practice Fire Mimicry, a method of emulating cultural burning, which is a key missing activity in the long-term care of our native trees and forests. It’s protocol, developed by PhD ecologist Lee Klinger, is derived from both Native American and Western science knowledge systems. It is known to be effective in reversing the decline and improving the health of oaks and other native trees. Importantly, all of the material amendments are non-toxic compounds typically used in organic agriculture.
Our protocol involves clearing of most smaller woody plants and trees from the understory, as would fire, which reduces competition of mature trees for water and nutrients. We then apply mixture calcium-rich minerals, biochar, and biologic amendments to the soil to improve its fertility, as does fire. The tree trunks are cleaned to remove moss and lichen which weaken the bark and make pathways for disease and insects. We then provide the trunk further protection from diseases and insects with an organic mineral poultice. If a tree has any stem canker infections (e.g., Sudden Oak Death), we can surgically remove the infection, cauterize the wound, and treat it with a mineral poultice. Poison Oak Removal

Our specialized tools and techniques focus on thinning tree canopies that encroach upon structures, raising the elevation of the lowest branches to eliminate the “ladder fuel” zone, and reducing the overall biomass in the surrounding area. These proactive measures not only help safeguard your home in the event of a wildfire but also enhance the resilience of the remaining trees, increasing their chances of surviving if fire does strike.
